Drywall Finishing - Primer, Painting & Trim

Regardless of how you plan to finish your house, you require to have your walls sand. Failure to sand drywall, you risk having noticeable imperfections under wall paint or tiles. So what is sanding and smoothing out drywall ridges all about?

During the finishing phases of a house, contractors like us apply a joint compound over joints, scratches, and interior angles to hide imperfections based on the client's Finishing desires. There are five primary finishing levels rated from level 0 – level 5. We like to offer selections for our customers as to what level of service they are looking for. Here is a brief description of each level of services that we provide:
Level 0
This is the most basic form of finishing and suitable for temporary structures. It does not require taping, nor does it require sanding and priming. Level 0 finishing is something we suggest to clients who are looking for us to get the project started for them and do the physical installation of the drywall boards.
Level 1
Level 1 finishing has exposed tapes and fasteners. A joint compound is used to hide imperfections, but excess compounds will not be scrapped off the wall. This type of finishing is also suitable for temporary structures or semi-finished basements. Often clients have short term needs or would like to complete the remainder of the process for themselves. Partially contracted and partially DIY.
Level 2
This type of finish is suitable for use in garages and warehouse storage areas. Though it is used in areas where appearance is not an issue, a double coating over interior angles, fasteners and joints will be applied. Excess compound is removed at this level. It is common for our commercial drywall customers to select this option.

Level 3
A level three finishing is suitable for use in residential areas. Different kinds of textures can be used in this level, especially if the final finish does not require a smooth surface. Two coatings of joint compound are applied on joints, accessories, and fasteners. Our goal is to provide the customer with a good base so they can be sure that their walls turn out in tiptop shape.
Level 4
At this level of finishing, sanding is needed because a primer will be applied. Also, fasteners and accessories should have three separate coats of joint compound, and the finishing is suitable where light textures, flat paints, and wall coverings will be used. However, keep in mind that flat colors should not be applied over light surfaces in critical lighting areas because they reduce joint photography.
Level 5
Exemplary drywall skills are required for a contractor to achieve this level of finish. The drywall must have flat surfaces that have at least two separate coats of joint compound. This finishing is suitable for use where the enamel and non-textured flat paints will be applied.

Drywall Sanding

There are two different sanding methods. These are:
  • Dry sanding method
  • Wet sanding method
Dry Drywall Sanding
In this method, the drywaller uses a sander to smoothen out uneven textures on the wall. It is the best way to smoothen drywall even though it is messy. It leaves many dust particles, and if the room is not adequately prepared, dust particles might settle on furniture and sofas
Wet Drywall Sanding
The main advantage of this sanding method is that it does not create dust particles. The disadvantage of wet sanding is that dry sanding has a better and smoother texture. Wet sanding requires a special polyurethane sponge that is squeezed off excess water and then sand. Because the surface is not as smooth and appealing, this method is best when you want to tile the wall or apply wallpaper on it.

Drywall Priming, Painting, and Trimming
Drywall Priming
There have been several debates on the internet on whether it is necessary to apply primer on drywall. However, we know that it is more beneficial to apply primer than paint without it. So why should primer be applied to drywall?
Saves Money and Time
When you do not apply a primer when painting, the paint will be absorbed by the plasterboard, which means it will take longer to dry. Also, with a primer, you do not have to apply two coats of paint. For example, if changing color from black to white, a primer will cover the black color, meaning only one white coat will be required.
Paint Adheres Better
Think of primer as glue. When you paint color on the gypsum board, it will stick to the board's primer instead of been absorbed by the plasterboard. This also means it will be easier to clean the painted wall.
It Acts as a Seal
Since primer acts as a seal or a barrier between the paint and the wall, it helps hide imperfections or small tiny blemishes.
In a nutshell, priming is essential every time you install sheetrock. It helps to cover the joint compound and create a firm base for texture.
Tips for Painting Drywall
Before painting drywall, you need first to prepare the site. Installing gypsum is a messy process that may cause gypsum dust to spread in the house. Before starting any paint job, we consider the following:
  • Imperfections that may be on the wall
  • We check for dust, and if any, we wipe the walls with a soft cloth
When applying paint, we calculate the area to be painted to know whether to use a sprayer or a roller. Though sprayers are messy to use, they save a lot of time, especially when painting a large area. After deciding on the best application method, we then choose a suitable primer and paint.

When applying the paint and primer, we prefer two coats instead to prevent seams and edge boards from bleeding.

Trim Options for Creative Home Owners
As technology evolves, so is drywall trim. The latest trims in the market enable interior designers and creative homeowners to experiment and modify their property. Wall trim is a form of construction made from either composite, vinyl, paper, or steel.
Several types of trims add spark and flare to your home. These are:
Chair trim
This is a horizontal wall trim resting on the middle of the wall to protect the wall from chair damage. To add spark to your room, you can paint one color on the lower part of the trim and another on the wall's upper part.
Crown molding trim
A crown molding is used to show the transition between the ceiling and the drywall. It is constructed at an angle of 45 degrees and gives the house a luxurious touch.
Picture frame trims
These trims are purely decorative and are known as a picture frame because four pieces of wood come together to form a picture frame. This trim adds depth and sophistication to the wall.
